Craniosacral

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on massaging technique. It uses a light touch to release tension around your body’s connective tissue network called the fascia. CST promotes pain relief from headaches, neck pain and the side effects of cancer treatment.

Cranio Sacral System

The craniosacral system is such an amazing and important part of our body, yet many of us (at least those who do not work in the medical field) have never even heard the word 'craniosacral' until someone attempts to explain what Craniosacral Therapy is!

The cranial system is a semi-closed hydraulic system which consists of four chambers called ventricles within the brain and includes the spinal cord itself. The cranial system contains within it Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), contained within a tough, waterproof membrane (the dura mater) which envelopes the brain and spinal cord. An important function of this system is the production, circulation and reabsorption of CSF. This fluid maintains the physiological environment in which your brain and nervous system develop, live and function.

CST: Craniosacral Therapy primarily facilitates processes that enhance the body’s innate abilities for natural healing. The therapy focuses on removing restrictive forces and obstacles related to the craniosacral system. Enhancing the mobility of the craniosacral system improves the circulation of both blood and CSF to the brain, spinal cord, pituitary gland, pineal gland and the cranial nerve systems, among other things.

How does craniosacral therapy work?

CST focuses on the gentle placement of hands to help release tension in your body’s connective tissue. This is known as “fascia” (pronounced “fash-ee-uh”). Fascia is the Latin word for band. It’s a casing found throughout your body that holds your organs, glands, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, brain and spinal cord. The fascia forms a body-wide connective tissue network.

The human body is interconnected, both structurally and functionally. This means that one area of your body can affect another. The goal of CST is tension relief (fascial clearance). This may help other connected parts of your body function better through:

  • Self-regulation.

  • Self-correction.

  • Self-healing.
